Calgary’s newest pop-rock band, Thomas Thomas, have released their debut self-titled EP that is filled with dreamy new-wave nostalgia. Created and fronted by namesakes Thomas Englund (Vocals/Guitar) and Shannon Thomas (Vocals/Keys) these singer-songwriters are intent on captivating audiences with a unique take on a classic 50’s pop-rock sound. They are striving to create a memorable live experience through striking visual aesthetics and intentional, honest songwriting. To help make their vision a reality, the two Thomas’ have recruited Michael Hudec (Lead Guitar), Anthony Vespa (Drums/Backing Vocals), and Mike Stokes (Bass) creating a delightfully dynamic super group. This quintet of musicians is paying homage to mid-century pop-rock bands while still being able to keep it relevant by adding in their own modern twist. Think earlier recordings of The Beatles, before the drugs, meets Vampire Weekend. The band has been making waves in the music scene leading up to this much anticipated release, they were nominated for Alternative Recording of the Year by the YYC Music Awards and were the Calgary regional winners in the Jim Bean Make History Talent Search. Thomas Thomas will take you back to a simpler time, a time when soda shops and sock hops were the norm and the jukebox belted out that good old wholesome rock and roll.
The self titled EP is six songs of pure joy. The heavenly harmonies blend together nicely as they sing out a variety of captivating hooks that will keep your toes tapping and your fingers snapping. The angelic tones will worm their way into your head, elevate your spirit, and leave you smiling as you groove along to the sounds of a by-gone era that has been tactfully transformed to appeal to modern day audiences. The soulful sounds of the guitar and the delicate synth lines combine to produce something that is eloquent and expressive. From the first wailing’s of the guitar on Gracious Host (Found Below), to the ethereal nature of If I Was A Ghost, to the heartfelt duet of It’s Your Bones, Thomas Thomas has produced something that is truly evocative and beautiful. The EP oozes happiness and greets the listener with a playfulness that can be hard to find in the present day era of the morose and the melancholy. This recording is an ode to lovers, both past and present, and will make you want to curl up with that special someone and enjoy the love struck ballads and catchy choruses of the true romantics of our age, Thomas Thomas.
